Practical guide / Measurement planning

Make sense of a part measurement

Connect a reported measurement to the drawing and setup so you can ask what it means for your part.

The starting question

Which drawing requirement and measurement setup does this reported result represent?

Existing DFM diagram showing a functional dimensional relationship
Existing dimensional-planning illustration, not a position inspection setup or acceptance report.

For your own project

Which part do you need help with?

Start with what you know. Keep the undecided details open for discussion.

  1. You bring

The current drawing or model and what the supplier needs to understand.

  2. We can help explore

Useful views, dimensions and a clearer technical handoff.

  3. Discuss next

Is this for a quotation, a design review or production planning?

Keep the complete requirement together

Provide the controlled drawing revision and the feature being evaluated. Preserve the complete feature control frame, its symbols and modifiers, datum references in their written order, and associated basic dimensions. Do not replace this information with an isolated tolerance number.

KEYENCE’s introductory guide identifies the geometric characteristic, zone indication, tolerance value, material requirements and datum references as elements to read in the feature control frame. Its overview is background reading; the actual drawing and governing standard remain the requirements to resolve.

Identify where the reported coordinates came from

Ask which datum setup or alignment, units, feature extraction and measurement record produced the result. Identify whether the report represents a point, section or evaluated feature. Retain the original record and any stated uncertainty or limitations for the quality team.

A screen capture containing two coordinate offsets does not by itself show that every position, orientation, size or other drawing requirement was evaluated. Ask for the missing context instead of converting a planning calculation into acceptance.

Do not import an unexplained pass badge

The inherited TPM tool describes a planar position calculation with size and modifier handling, and explicitly excludes complete drawing acceptance. We have inspected its scope but have not independently validated its datum treatment, bonus rules, fit presets or pass/fail logic for import.

Our customer tools therefore do not issue a position acceptance result. Bring the complete requirement and report to the responsible designer or metrologist. Keep unresolved interpretation separate from customer confirmation of design intent.
