The starting question
What property needs to be measured, in what condition, and against which references?

Read the complete requirement
Separate size, form, orientation and location. Measuring a bore’s diameter does not establish its position relative to datum features. Identify the drawing standard, datum references, modifiers and final processing condition before choosing equipment.
Decide whether you need a measured value, a functional acceptance check, or a report of multiple characteristics. That decision affects the method and the records you should request.
Resolution is only one part of the decision
A display with more digits does not establish the uncertainty of the complete measurement. Contact geometry, alignment, force, temperature, part condition and the operator can all matter.
Review the instrument’s specification and calibration evidence alongside the proposed method. NIST describes traceability through a documented chain of calibrations, each contributing to measurement uncertainty; a calibration label alone does not establish suitability for every task.
Plan access and acceptance before buying
Check that contacts or probes can reach the feature without changing the part’s condition. Thin walls, deep bores and coated surfaces need particular attention. Ask who will establish the acceptance rule and resolve results near a limit.
Build a purchase brief around range, contact form, required measurement performance, environment, calibration, accessories and reporting. Compare instruments against that brief rather than price or display resolution alone.
Compare the options
| Tool or method | Typical question | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Caliper or micrometer | What is the accessible linear size? | Contact geometry and method must fit the feature and tolerance. |
| Bore gauge or plug gauge | What is the bore size or functional acceptance? | Size alone does not verify the bore’s location or full geometry. |
| Indicator and reference setup | How does a surface vary in this setup? | The support and reference arrangement determine what the result means. |
| CMM or other coordinate method | How do features relate to the reference system? | Alignment, sampling, probe access and uncertainty still require a plan. |
