Practical guide / Heat-treatment planning

Describe the properties your part needs

Explain where hardness or other material properties matter, and prepare the questions for a heat-treatment supplier.

The starting question

What result must be demonstrated, where on the part, and under which agreed specification?

Exploded mechanical CAD assembly used as a general planning illustration
General portfolio illustration. No alloy condition, heat treatment or hardness is inferred from this assembly.

For your own project

Which part do you need help with?

Start with what you know. Keep the undecided details open for discussion.

  1. You bring

An idea, a rough sketch or an example of the problem.

  2. We can help explore

Possible shapes, features and a clearer concept to discuss.

  3. Discuss next

What must it do, and which questions matter most?

Name the requirement and its location

Provide the material grade and starting condition, drawing revision, surfaces requiring treatment and any surfaces that must remain untreated. Identify the specification and edition actually required by your contract; do not silently replace it with a newer edition.

Ask the responsible heat treater and quality team to resolve the required hardness scale, depth definition, acceptance limits, inspection locations and reporting method. If these are unknown, record them as questions rather than selecting a generic threshold.

Keep estimates separate from measurements

The inherited TPM tool has separate modes for a gas-carburizing model and a measured hardness traverse. Its own interface identifies the model as a planning estimate, not a qualified process recipe or inspection acceptance.

We have not independently validated its diffusion constants, carbon-to-hardness correlations, published sample traverse or process limits. None are imported here. A simulated penetration depth must not be presented as measured hardness depth on your part.

Agree on the evidence before work starts

ISO lists ISO 18203:2026 as a standard covering measurement of several types of surface-hardened layer depth in steel. We reviewed its public scope and edition metadata only, not the full procedure; this guide does not assign its test thresholds or claim compliance.

Ask who supplies the original inspection record, which part or specimen it represents, and how its locations and results connect to the drawing. Resolve any post-treatment machining or final dimensional checks with the responsible teams before releasing the manufacturing sequence.
